More than any other aspect of Maori culture, the Haka is an expression of passion and vigour and is the worldwide identity of our Maori race and New Zealand as a country.
Many New Zealander’s perform the Haka giving them a sense of pride and acknowledgment of who they are and where they are from.
The most famous New Zealand Haka is “Kamate Kamate” because of its association with the New Zealand All Blacks and many other sporting teams who perform it.
Ngati Toa Chief “Te Rauparaha” composed the Haka “Kamate Kamate” in the early 1820’s and tells a simple story of Te Rauparaha being pursued, being protected and ultimately surviving to inflict Utu (revenge) on his enemy. |
